ROAD TRIP WITH MY BROTHER
My brother saw the comments before I did. So let me tell y’all about the weekend behind that outfit.
My little brother John is a poet, and he’s been flirting with stand-up comedy for a while. He just did his first set, and I didn’t want him to stop there. So I loaded him in the van and took him to Atlanta to show him what keeping going looks like up close.
We hiked Stone Mountain at 5am, before either of us was fully awake. We pulled up to DBS Sounds in Riverdale, and Rapsody called me up. I ended up at a poetry open mic I never signed up for, which is exactly the kind of thing that happens when you travel with a poet. And we closed it out at Zooman’s show at The Gathering Spot, where John got to see how a comedian commands a room.
Somewhere in all of that, both of us learned the same lesson. You’ll have to press play to find out what it was.
And yes, I finally tell the truth about the outfit from Ray Daniels’ show on The Cut. If you saw the comments, you already know my brother had my back before I even logged on.
